Nothing needs to be fixed.

Having a GM who can read the market, who doesn't overplay their hand and has some balls and everything is fine.

You cant just get rid of the salary cap.

You want to fix the trade deadline. Get rid of the NTC NMC clauses and make them earned by experience.

5 years - limited NTC - 10 teams
10 years - Full NTC

you want to make trade deadline day exciting? ban the NTC/NMC.
Done.
PA will never go for it, but there would be a lot more movement.

"I see the benefits of this in terms of player movement, and creating a very exciting trade deadline day, but my fear would be that the 2-3 best teams would get the best UFA's. The No Movement clauses would still be binding, so the UFA's could determine which teams they would agree to be moved to. In other words, I believe the 2-3 best teams would just get better."

This is absolutely true

teams would sign up to 99% of the cap in the offseason, wait til deadline, and then stock up and go way over the budget to be beyond stacked to win a cup, and then of course any player worth trading for would immediately only wanna go to one of these 3 teams with an actual shot to win the cup

so, imagine the hawks, they get ladd, but now they have 0 restriction on the cap, dont you think that eric staal, or versteeg would say i wanna go there?

this idea is stupid

you cant have a cap for 3/4 of the year and then disregard it for the remaining 1/4

am i missing something in this idea? if i am, i will gladly retract this rant

It would make the wealthier teams more likely to succeed in the playoffs. Might as well dump the cap and let teams try to buy all of the best players.

Isn't this something that would actually require opening up the CBA? It's outright letting teams ignore the salary cap for traded UFAs.

And in the end I still don't think it changes the bigger issue. Teams can and will do their business in weeks and days leading up to the deadline. Deadline day is still going to be very hit or miss.

A fun idea, but not one I could ever see being implemented.

So.... you want to change the rules of the game to make the trade deadline more entertaining? Like the purpose of trading is entertainment and not the betterment of your team?

Here's an idea..... Let the Media make up asinine rumors so the media stays busy and feels like they are adding value.... I'll go first:

Players like Drouin, who had many suitors according to this site; and had cap hits almost everyone could fit, weren't moved this deadline. No "star" players were really rumored to be available, I'm kind of doubt whether or not Hamhuis is in the playoffs makes a difference to the league. What's more, you claiming the NTC's wouldn't mean it only benefitting 2-3 teams is suggested to be inaccurate, since Hamhuis didn't waive to go elsewhere when he couldn't go to the 2-3 teams he wanted. Why would other players doing so be likely?

You can't have a NTC/NMC until your 8th year in the league already.

I say leave it as is. Ain't broke don't fix it. Who cares if the talking heads have to spend 5 hours sitting about twiddling their thumbs?! Then cut back the idiotic over hyped coverage. THAT is the problem, not that there are fewer trades or not enough excitement!
